Tell me about the latest books you have published.

I published a novel in Spain with Lengua de Trapo. It was not a good idea because the publishers had promised me they would bring it to Argentina and they did not hold their promise. As a result my friends were not able to read it. We also compiled an anthology entitled "Región" with Enzo Maquiera that collects short stories with political content from young Latin American authors. It was published by Interzona.

¿Has publicado en formato electrónico?

Have you published in electronic format?
I believe I was one of the first Argentinean writers to have a blog, it was a p-code machine that I hooked up to the server of a software company where I worked between 2002 and 2004. After that I participated in various collective blogs and now I have “El conejo de la suerte,” but Facebook and Twitter have transformed it into an old notebook. I am now a member of the directive committee of the CEC, which stands for Centro de Estudios Contemporáneos (Center for Contemporary Studies), a place that promotes Web culture and where I manage "Revista Tónica," the first digital magazine in Argentina specially created for Kindle, tablets and others e-readers. The CEC also has a small e-publishing component where I published a collection of articles and essays about the Web, social media and literature entitled, rather grantly, "La masa y la lengua." It can be downloaded for free at http://www.elcec.com.ar/coleccin_ensayo.

The CEC is basically a platform for exploitation, reflection and insertion into the digital world. The keyword is "access." Aside from what’s in the CEC, you can read in Scribd my novels "Los amigos soviéticos" and "Hiroshima." Both were published in paper but someone loaded them on the Web and I think that’s great. In my opinion, the fact that they can be read electronically doesn't affect sales in a negative way, quite the contrary.

This October is the 10th anniversary of the publication of "El caníbal," my first novel. I will probably load the PDF on the Web. And I must tell you that soon my book of short stories "Instrucciones para dar el gran batacazo intelectual argentino" will simultaneously be published in paper by Reina Negra and made freely accessible online by the CEC.

What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?

Well, it's an easy question. "Los noveles," created by Salvador Luis, holds the trademark. It's a natural catastrophe in reverse: it began well, continued well and ended well. Cheers, Salvador. I also follow Maxi Tomas' blog who selects the best from numerous publications that I find tedious. It's very useful. Finally, "Revista Tónica" was created to answer this question.

Who are your major influences in Ibero-American literature?
Fogwill. Ricardo Piglia. Jorge Asís. Carlos Correas. Beatriz Sarlo. Daniel Link. Julio Schvartzman. Horacio Gonzalez. Jorge Abelardo Ramos. Nicolás Mavrakis (you can download his ebook “#Findelperiodismo y otras autopsias de la morgue digital” at the CEC. I highly recommend it.)

Victor Shklovski. Terry Eagleton. George Steiner. Tibor Fischer. Mark Elliot Zuckerberg.

What other authors have influenced your work?
Victor Shklovski. Terry Eagleton. George Steiner. Tibor Fischer. Mark Elliot Zuckerberg.

What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?

"Los Gauchos irónicos" is coming out in August. It's a series of critical essays about authors from my generation. They are not so new anymore, but the index of this book would be the ideal answer to this question. The authors I cover are Carlos Busqued, Mariano Dorr, Pablo Katchadjian, Federico Falco, Carlos Godoy, Luciano Lamberti, Iván Moissef and Pola Oloixarac. I could also recommend Sonia Budassi, Hernán Vanoli, Mariana Enríquez, Patricio Pron and Héctor Kalamicoy, who hasn't written much but is very good. Also María Lobo, an Argentinean from Tucumán who writes better than John Cheever, if you can believe it. From Bolivia, Sebastián Antezana, Giovanna Rivero and Wilmer Urrelo Zárate. From Uruguay, Ramiro Sanchiz. From México, Yuri Herrera.

What are you working on now?
A long essay about Borges and money.

Tell me about the latest books you have published.
I have participated in various anthologies, but have only published four books: the novels “Trabajos del reino” and “Señales que precederán al fin del mundo” and the children stories “¡Éste es mi nahual!” and ”Los ojos de Lía.” I thought about the novels for a long time, at least one year for the first, and two or three for “Señales”; but once I had pondered long enough, I was able to write them pretty quickly, in a few months, thanks to numerous notes that served as compass rather than a detailed plan. With the children’s books, instead of thinking so much, I tried to connect with a certain sensibility that could bring me closer to the juvenile reader; both stories required a lot of effort from me, because talking to a child requires clear communication without being condescending. Children know what they want to see and listen, beyond one may think they need to know or not.

¿Has publicado en formato electrónico?

Have you published in electronic format?
I have published in e-journals but none of my books are in digital format yet (at least legally, I hear there are some pirated versions out there).

What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?
The digital magazine “Hermano Cerdo,” no doubt; but in general, rather than following specific publications, I read articles that I find through social media. Nowadays, I believe that people create their own journals when deciding what recommendations to follow or what criteria to trust.

Who are your major influences in Ibero-American literature?
“La Celestina” is a book I revisit every so often, it’s virtuous, sinful, intelligent; “La plaza del diamante,” by Mercé Rodoreda; Jesús Gardea’s works, Daniel Sada, Rafael Bernal, Josefina Vicens, among others. “Cómo me hice monja”, by Aira; “Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas” by Machado de Assis, a book ahead of its century.

What other writers have influenced your work?
I’m not sure if they have influenced my work, but I would like them to, this is a list of desires rather than self-recognition: Dashiell Hammett, Boris Vian, Kurt Vonnegut, Dostoyevsky, Coetzee, Marguerite Yourcenar.

¿Qué nuevos autores hispanohablantes recomendarías?

Hay muchos: Iris García Cuevas, Julián Herbert, Alberto Chimal, de México; Inés Bortagaray de Uruguay, Diego Zúñiga de Chile, Elvira Navarro de España, Juan Álvarez de Colombia, Giovanna Rivero de Bolivia, Carlos Yushimito de Perú; por fortuna, ésta es una lista interminable.

What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
There are many: Iris García Cuevas, Julián Herbert, Alberto Chimal, from Mexico; Inés Bortagaray from Uruguay; Diego Zúñiga from Chile; Elvira Navarro from España; Juan Álvarez from Colombia; Giovanna Rivero from Bolivia; Carlos Yushimito from Peru. Fortunately, this a never-ending list.

What are you working on now?
I am finishing a novella about an individual who needs to go out on the street at a moment when everything indicates that this person should remain locked indoors. I started it and made progress on it twice before, but I discarded those versions; rather than editing and I am starting over again.

How would you like future libraries to be?
A combination of what we already have: the flexibility of digital libraries and the beauty of paper objects. Perhaps we will be able to find a book online and have it materialize in our hands.

Tell me about the latest books you have published.
My latest book is “JFK,” the second part of my “Trilogía Madrileña” (“Madrid Trilogy”). It’s the biography of an escort, a guy who sells more than his body and seems unable to do anything against what we call destiny. “JFK” picks up one of the characters from “Paseador de perros” but precedes it chronologically. I want people to be able to read the three novels together or independently, I want them to be autonomous though they are part of a trilogy.

¿Has publicado en formato electrónico?

Have you published in electronic format?
I published stories in some magazines, a while back, then I stopped because sometimes they ask for unpublished work with no budget for remuneration, and this type of collaboration is labor that should be compensated. It’s different when they ask for your permission to disseminate a story previously published in some book. Or when you write a blog on your own, or an unsolicited column, as it’s my case in Cinépata, where I intend to publish regularly and write about films that I used to watch on Sundays.

What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?
I believe the most up to date is the one by Thays, which tends to be a summary of the rest, and from there one can visit the blogs and e-journals he mentions. I tend to discover more writers, not always new, thanks to my job at a bookstore, where they get everything. In the end it depends on your curiosity as a reader. Nowadays they publish so much and as you age you don’t have as much time as you had when you were a student, this forces me to be more drastic, if the first ten pages don’t grab me, I’m sorry, I abandon the book. Though sometimes I give them another chance, but I don’t remember reading an entire book in that second chance.

Who are your major influences in Ibero-American literature?
My influences are Julio Ramón Ribeyro (almost all), Bryce Echenique (no more than four books), Oswaldo Reynoso, Alberto Fuguet, Manuel Puig (during his last years). These five writers have been important for me as a reader and writer. Some got me hooked on reading, others showed me a path I was to afraid to follow. I could mention more, but they have not influenced me as a writer. I like Bolaño, but I wouldn’t be able to say if his work is present in mine. I imagine that all the writers from my generation have read him, but does anyone resemble him? It’s impossible, and those who try will look ridiculous for sure.

I would like to say that Vargas Llosa is an influence, but I read him late. Perhaps his writing will be of help in the future. My ambitions are more in tune with Ribeyro, if those types of ambitions can exist.

Alan Sillitoe, Raymond Carver, Richard Ford, Henry Miller, Charles Bukowski.

What other writers have influenced your work?
Alan Sillitoe, Raymond Carver, Richard Ford, Henry Miller, Charles Bukowski. I read the later profusely when I began to write. It’s has been a while since I read him, but I remember two stories: “Son of Satan” and “The Most Beautiful Woman in Town,” because there was tenderness. However, the most decisive has been Sillitoe. A while back I was able to see the film based on “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner,” which is a bit long, but I had promised myself to watch it in a cinema, and so I did, in the Filmoteca de Madrid. When the movie ended, I couldn’t control myself and applauded, then other people joined me in. I went from ridicule to joy. Sillitoe had just passed away a few months prior.

What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
I have three names: Luis Hernán Castañeda, Maximiliano Barrientos and Fernando San Basilio. I would like for Castañeda’s work to reach Spain, writers with such imagination are needed. The three are writers with feeling; they move you, which for me it’s the first requirement for a book. I’m always suspicious of authors whose work is presented as an “exercise in style,” or the “first computer novel of this century.” They have often been disappointing readings.

What are you working on now?
I am working on several books. I have just finished a book on soccer and my mother. I am on the third novel of my “Madrid Trilogy,” which started with “Paseador de perros” and has followed this year with “JFK,” both published by Candaya. Then I have a book of short stories that I have just begun. And I must edit a book that my mother left unpublished. Aside from that, this year Estruendomudo is printing a new edition of “Matacabros,” the first book I published sixteen years ago. I also try to publish in magazines, writing accounts or book reviews. I prefer to write accounts; I consider narrative journalism another important part of my training.

How would you like future libraries to be?
Paper libraries will survive; there will always be paper books. On the other hand, digital libraries will dwindle in format, because one will be able to carry a hundred books or more in a mobile phone. Technology seems to have no limits. Paper will remain the same. One thing I hope is that Spain begins to treat pocket books with more respect, which are horrible for the most part. Why don’t they follow Penguin’s example?

______________________________________________________________

Tell me about the latest books you have published.
In 2008, I published "Postales del náufrago digital," a compilation of posts I wrote in a blog I launched in 2004. They were texts with a distinct literary vocation, humbly following the steps of observers of the everyday life such as Josep Pla, Francisco Umbral, or Miguel Sánchez-Ostiz's diaries. Three years later, in the fall of 2011, I published "Luz de noviembre, por la tarde" with Demipage, a book where I confront the pain and confusion I endured as a result of the death of my parents in 2000.

¿Has publicado en formato electrónico?

Have you published in electronic format?
Not yet, though “Luz de noviembre...” will soon be distributed through Amazon, for e-readers.

What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?

Culturamas, Sigueleyendo, Koult, La Tormenta en un Vaso, the blogs by Jordi Corominas and Juan Mal-herido, Granite & Rainbow and Desde la ciudad sin cines, to name a few.

Who are your major influences in Ibero-American literature?
Last year I discovered the Chilean writer Alberto Fuguet, whose novel “Missing (una investigación),” in my opinion, made him fascinating as a current author. I barely read Portuguese literature but I recently discovered Valter Hugo Mae, the author of “A máquina de fazer espanhóis.” I like authors such as Roberto Bolaño, Umbral, Enrique Vila-Matas and Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, from Cuba, whose “Trilogía sucia de La Habana” is a marvelous incursion in the life of such a literary city, as is the capital of Cuba. I would like to read Rodrigo Fresán or Patricio Pron, but the literary destiny has not lead me to them yet. Oh, a special mention for the Guatemalan writer Eduardo Halfón, whose “El ángel literario” fell in my hands when the author still had hair on his head, and I liked it for its simplicity and humility. I applaud the recent translation of his book into Italian.

What other writers have influenced your work?
I like authors who color their work with an autobiographical patina, who write from experience. I thus think about Pio Baroja, Michel Houellebecq, Paul Auster, Vila-Matas, who in spite of writing metaliterature also inserts himself in his stories. Thomas Bernhard’s “Autobiographical Stories” taught me that all life is sensible material for a writer, something I also learned from the literature of Philip Roth, such as “Patrimony” or “The Dying Animal.” Or “The Rachel Papers” by Martin Amis, that brought him fame overnight in the seventies.

What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
I have enjoyed Margarita Leoz’s stories in “Segunda residencia,” I found “Canción de tumba” by Julián Herbert interesting (though too much of a “collage”) and I follow closely Alberto Olmos’ work (“Ejército enemigo”), one of the authors from Granta who interests me the most, as well as Elvira Navarro or Javier Montes, whose “Segunda parte” I felt was suggestive but possibly too dull.

What are you working on now?
I just finished a personal diary and I'm working on an autobiographical novel that I began last June which unfolded simultaneously with my life. I started writing it in June 2011 and it narrates events that I experienced beginning that month.

How would you like future libraries to be?
Truly, I hadn't thought much about this, but I imagine with good online reader services, in order to request books in advance, thus saving time. Also with collections kept up to date with current publications, and a room dedicated to recommended titles and those that are most interesting in all disciplines. And librarians who are more than peons responsible for checking books in and out; who would assist the reader during the often difficult process of gathering information and research material, and who would offer solutions, shortcuts, access to other tools such as newspapers or journal archives, etc.

Tell me about the latest books you have published.
To date I have published two novels. The first, “La toma del manuscrito,” is a lengthy book written vaguely as a crime novel and as metaliterature. It’s set in colonial Africa and contains several stories that occur at different times, with numerous characters. The second, “El amor según,” is a novella, and, comparatively, less ambitious as a project. It narrates only one story, if that, and creates moods and recreates some memories that are meaningful to the main character. They are very different novels. When I wrote the first one, I wrote a long story, focusing on technique and with attention to form. With the second one, I purposely intended to exploit others styles of writing, with subtle tones that set aside fireworks and deliberate about something less tainted by artifice – the everyday life.

¿Has publicado en formato electrónico?
Pues no mucho.

Have you published in electronic format?
Well, not much. I have published short stories, book reviews and fragments of novels in magazines such as “Los Noveles” and the blog of Eterna Cadencia. I have participated more actively in the digital newspaper “Oxigeno,” where I am a columnist. There I publish a biweekly column; it’s generally literary criticism or a book review. I haven’t yet published an e-book.

What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?
There are very interesting e-journals out there, though not exclusively dedicated to new authors, such as "Suelta," "Hermano cerdo," "Letras Libres," "El Malpensante," the now defunct "Los Noveles," "The Barcelona Review" and some others. Additionally, I follow closely blogs by authors such as Edmundo Paz Soldán, Patricio Pron, Ivan Thays and Gustavo Faverón. But, since getting lost in the woods is what's interesting about the Web, I would recommend doing so in order to find new trees.

In Spain Cervantes, Calderón, Marías, Muñoz Molina and Javier Cercas. In Portugal, Fernando Pessoa.

What other writers have influenced your work?
Many, to be honest, but to be brief: from Joyce, Poe, Flaubert and Faulkner, to Cormac McCarthy, Kazuo Ishiguro, Georges Perec, Thomas Pynchon, Umberto Eco, Ian McEwan and J. M. Coetzee. The question, really, is impossible to answer, because the influence of others on one’s work is most often unclear and difficult to recognize adequately. Also, recognizing an influence is a sign of respect, of gratitude, and of rebellion, like killing one’s father in order to achieve independence; for this reason, naming certain authors, may also be a denial.

What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
There are a number of them who, in the last few years, I have been reading with interest from the trenches of journalism. Among them are, Juan Terranova, Patricio Pron, Federico Falco and Luciano Lamberti (Argentina); Alejandro Zambra, Diego Zúñiga and Antonio Díaz Oliva (Chile); Yuri Herrera and Carlos Velázquez (Mexico); Diego Trelles and Daniel Alarcón (Peru, though Alarcón writes in English); Miguel Antonio Chávez (Ecuador) and Giovanna Rivero, Maximiliano Barrientos, Liliana Colanzi, Rodrigo Hasbún, Juan Pablo Piñeiro, Wimer Urrelo and Mauricio Murillo (Bolivia).

What are you working on now?
Right now I am writing and editing some short stories for a couple of anthologies: one whose theme is the end of the world, the other gathers some Bolivian writers under thirty. I don’t know if these stories and others I have around will shape into a book, the short story is a very difficult format for me, proving to me systematically that I can’t always connect to it as a writer, but we will see. Also, I have been working for years on a new novel. I’m still at a relatively early stage but I imagine that, in terms of its form, it will be in tune with my first book. It’s a futuristic novel, a bit sci-fi, that speculates on the distant future of the book and on literature.

How would you like future libraries to be?
This question pulls me in opposite directions. On one hand, I would like them to remain as they are, but on the other I wish they would fully enter the digital world. On one hand, then, I like libraries that are not only repositories but specialized places, privileged places for reading. But I would also appreciate if libraries could truly reach people through the digitization of their holdings. Meaning that one, any one, be able to access all the holdings of a library through their computer, from home or anywhere. I believe that a mixture of both forms, the traditional and the innovative, would be ideal, though I’m not sure what that would look like.
