Háblame un poco del último libro que has publicado.
Es una pequeña memoir sobre mi infancia como lector de tebeos y como dos novelas contemporáneas, “Las aventuras de Kavalier y Clay” de Michael Chabon y “La fortaleza de la soledad” de Jonathan Lethem, emplean una nostalgia similar para construir un discurso sobre la memoria.
Tell me briefly about the latest book you have published.
It's a little memoir about my childhood as a comic-book reader and how two contemporary novels, Michael Chabon's “The Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” and Jonathan Lethem's “Fortress of the solitude” employ a similar nostalgia for building a discourse on memory.

Si admites la influencia, admites ser un buen alumno, así que no me constan mayores influencias que mis pasiones. Me apasiona la literatura de Jorge Luis Borges, Michael Chabon y John Updike. Y muchos clásicos. Pero ¿aprender? Acaso el aprendizaje sea mejor cuando ya no parece uno entender o saber o parecer alguien de mayor rango.
What writers have influenced your work?
If you admit influence, you admit being a good learner so I have no bigger influences than my passions. I'm passionate about the literature of Jorge Luis Borges, Michael Chabon and John Updike. And a ton of classics. But to learn? Maybe learning is better when one cannot understand or know or look like someone of a greater level.

¿Qué nuevos autores hispanohablantes recomendarías?
Esta es una selección incompleta, por supuesto, habría de recomendar muchos más, pero ahí van unos cuantos.
Recomendaría "Hilos de sangre" de Gonzalo Torné porque es la mejor novela o la más impresionante o la más completa de las que he leído de un autor hispanohablante nuevo. La prosa de Torné, de largas, hermosas digresiones, tiene el eco de Marías y Benet y, por encima de todos, Bellow. Esta historia de una familia catalana durante el siglo veinte está centrada en Gabriel, que una vez fue joven y bobo y anarquista y termina siendo uno de los personajes más interesantes de la literatura reciente. Quizá una prueba de las estafas de la juventud, quizá un (de alguna manera heroico) superviviente nato, quizá un traidor, posiblemente todas estas cosas al mismo tiempo. La voz de la nieta, Clara, está escrita también con delicadeza. Torné es un maestro y los novelistas futuros tendrán que igualar esto.
Aunque ha sido traducida al inglés, con el venidero "Bluebird and Other Tattoos", el mejor libro de poesía de Luna Miguel hasta la fecha es "Pensamientos estériles". Es el mejor libro que ha publicado con diferencia, con un sorprendente control de la voz y una exploración muy interesante de sus temas habituales (el sexo y la enfermedad, básicamente). Las ilustraciones de Laia Arqueros solo añaden más misterio a este libro sombrío, delicioso.
He admirado mucho "Paseos con mi madre" de Javier Perez de Andújar. No estoy seguro si Andújar es un escritor que pueda ser entendido fácilmente por los lectores extranjeros porque su estilo es muy peculiar, influenciado por autores como Valle-Inclán o Francisco Umbral, pero de todos modos ha escrito un hermoso libro de memorias que es al mismo tiempo una novela.
También me gustaría recomendar "La piel de la Boca". Es un libro escrito por Jorge Carrión, una pequeña maravilla. Es una crónica sobre un convento de un barrio pobrísimo de Buenos Aires, pero, como muchos de los libros de ensayo y no ficción de Carrión, es un libro sobre la ciudad y lo que hay transigir para habitarla, sobre el espacio y sobre la derrota.
Recomendaría también un magnífico libro de poesía como "Nova" de Vicente Luis Mora, una novela audaz, triste y extrañísima como "La vida privada de los árboles" de Alejandro Zambra y otra injustamente olvidada, "El vano ayer" de Isaac Rosa.
What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
This is, of course, an incomplete selection; I would recommend many more, but here are some of them.
I would recommend "Hilos de sangre" by Gonzalo Torné because it's the best or the most impressive or the most complete novel I've read of a new Spanish-speaking author. The prose of Torné, of long, beautiful digressions, echoes Marías and Benet and most of all, Bellow. This story of a Catalan family during the twentieth century is rooted on a central character, named Gabriel, who was young and fool and an anarchist and ends up being one of the most interesting characters of recent literature. Maybe a proof of the fraud of youth, maybe a (somehow heroic) natural-born survivor, maybe a traitor, possibly all those things at once. The voice of the granddaughter, Clara, is also delicately written. Torné is a master and the novelists to come will have to match this.
Even though she's been translated into English, with the upcoming "Bluebird and Other Tattoos," the best poetry book by Luna Miguel to date is "Pensamientos estériles." It's the best book she's published so far, with a surprising voice control and a very interesting exploration of her usual themes (sex and illness mainly). The illustrations of Laia Arqueros just add more mystery to this somber, delicious book.
I have admired a lot "Paseos con mi madre" by Javier Pérez de Andújar. I am not sure if Andújar is a writer than can be easily understood by foreign readers because his style is peculiar, influenced by authors as Valle-Inclán or Francisco Umbral, but, anyway, he's written a beautiful book of memories that is at the same time a novel.
I would also like to recommend "La piel de la Boca". It's a book written by Jorge Carrión, a little gem. It's a chronicle about a convent in a very poor neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, but, as many of the essays and non-fiction books by Carrion, it's a book about the city and what you have to compromise for living in, about space and about defeating.
I would equality recomend "Nova," a great book of poetry by Vicente Luis Mora; an audacious, sad and very strange novel as "The private life of trees" by Alejandro Zambra and another novel, unfairly forgotten, "El vano ayer" by Isaac Rosa.

En una novela, la primera, algo tan terrorífico como agotador como, claro, feliz.
What are you working on now?
On a novel, the first one, something scary, exhausting and, of course, joyful.
¿Cómo te gustaría que fueran las bibliotecas del futuro?
Habrá libros que no se digitalicen. O que necesiten hacerlo. Habrá libros extraños, perdidos que necesiten ser rescatados. Las bibliotecas, se asume, serán centros de WiFi, pero también deben asegurar un archivo. Respecto a los ebooks habrá el mismo problema que existe ya con las novedades: la demanda de best sellers, la espera como reglamento democrático respecto a la compra.
Pero la biblioteca tiene que ser un espacio en el que descubrir cosas, no tiene porque satisfacer, sola o enteramente, la necesidad de leer una novedad, aunque comprenda la demanda. Y creo que aquí la redefinición tecnológica también tiene que completarse respecto al archivo. Ya hay proyectos en marcha muy interesantes como Google Books, pero la ambición tiene que ser mayor. Cambian muchas cosas, claro, sobre todo para el ensayo y el pensamiento, puesto que la selección de Project Gutenberg ya es una prueba bastante optimista de lo que puede ocurrir con gran parte del canon occidental.
How would you like future libraries to be?
There will be some books that won't get digitized. Or that will need to be. There will be strange, lost books that will need to be rescued. It's assumed that libraries will be centers of wireless Internet, but they should secure a collection. Regarding e-books, the same problem that already exists with new arrivals will remain: the demand for best sellers, waiting as a democratic rule as opposed to buying.
But the library has to be a place where you go to discover things, it doesn't have to satisfy, only or totally, the need to read a new book, though I understand the demand. And I believe that here redefined technologies must also reach and be implemented in the collection. There are already very interesting projects in place like Google Books, but the ambition has to be greater. These projects change lots of things, of course, specially for genres like essays and ideas, because the selection of Project Gutenberg is already enough of an optimistic evidence of what could happen with good part of the Western canon.
